So what does a career in Entertainment really consist of ?
A career in acting / modeling / the arts
~entertainment..... is based on focus, networking, hard work, and
dedication to your career. I want you to
know that any success is based on 100% hard work, and not solely in the fact
that you may know someone. If the Entertainment Business was simple, everyone
would do it, it's the most rewarding business on earth for me..... but to be
successful and have your life dream become rewarding you will bust your ass, and
you will have down falls, it is all on how you recover and grow that will
determine your success. I have met plenty of up and coming talent that give up
when confronted with struggle.
Where should you be ?
Being around the business helps, that is
where you want to be if you want to be in any part of this business, you at
least have to be around it, you have to be the witness, you have to soak in
everything that happens from a PA’s job to a writer, actor, director,
editor, model…… even if all you want to do is act, you have to make yourself
available to information so you can educate yourself in terms, foundation ,
knowledge, and information that allows you to make decisions as to where you
want to go….. The main
purpose for understanding your location and where you are soaking in information
is to develop a strong focus on what it is you really want to do.
One professional is quoted as
saying, "had I not gone to school, and
followed the focus that was changed…… I never would have had any type of
opportunity. As a matter of fact, when I first came out to LA, I couldn’t find
work at all. Get this, a great
writer, co creator of a major TV Drama, could not get me anything."
Networking will eventually put you in a
place where managers and agents will get to know you. So when someone says it is “ Who
you know “ they always forget to tell you that by networking, you will get to
know that person, but you have to bust your ass and network with everyone. There
are no free rides in the entertainment business at all, you have to have strength,
determination, the willingness to give up all preconceived notions of being the
star, and set focused goals to move forward, which we I will talk about in a few.
Even in Hollywood, you still have to be educated to some degree. You have to know how to
read and write, and this alone should already say to you, no free rides, it
isn’t just who you know, that is just a perception that people have when they
hear it so much that they believe it. Yes, it is true that every blue moon you
hear of a success story from the hood where someone breaks out of the norm and
gets a huge contract that has never had any experience acting or modeling
etc...... but this is less than .01 % of the ultra successful professionals
working, so aiming to be in that category is the worst way to attempt a career
in Hollywood.
Experience is huge, the more you know, the
better. Always keep in mind, this is the entertainment business, which is based
on creative flow, so the experience out weighs everything that could come your
way. I recommend education as the first and foremost, because the smarter you
are as a person, the better inclined you become at making serious decisions,
especially for writers, which will really give you a focus as you grow. Let’s talk about writers for a minute. Let’s say you
want to be a writer, your going to want to take as many classes as possible and
get as much experience as you can about writing.
