Managing Yourself

Since this book is more about ( how to ) this last chapter could go on forever.
Especially since there are soooo many little pieces of information that can be
important in the future. I am only going to touch lightly on different ways to
build management so that you can take ideas and do it better yourself. I will
however break down a contract in this chapter to help you save time and hassle.
Self management as a young artist is the first subject that I want to talk
on, since you might be an artist starting out, and not have a lot of $ to pay
for someone to manage you. Before I go on with management, let's define
management.
Management: To thoroughly understand
the surroundings of the occupation, to follow the trends, styles and changes of
your art form, to stay connected with all forms of networking, to build
relationships with all forms of the business, and to look out for the artist and
work. Stay connected with working networks and utilize them when you are trying
to break ground through promoting and marketing your skill.
Sounds like a lot huh ? Actually you should be doing all of thee above as an
artist anyways. Regardless of what you do, you should stay aware of your art
form VIA internet, artists in your field, and of course, networking.
A good manager knows what is happening, where it is happening, and when.
This allows you to be a part of as much as possible while you are building up
your skills. Let's say you are an interior decorator, you work on a stage set
for a community theatre, and you are into architecture too. Basically you are an
all around designer, and you keep up to date by reading the internet trade
stories on designers in your field, you read the magazines you know are
informative, and as you are reading the daily newspaper when you see a story
that reads, " The Miller family is offering $12,000 to the best armature
architect designer that submits there idea of how the new movie theatre should
look downtown " As a self manager, it is important that you are aware of
everything in your surroundings, and as you win this $12,000 you think to
yourself, what if I was not reading the paper?
The perception people have on you is a 50 / 50 thing. There is the artist
side of you, and the way that you handle yourself once you have attention drawn
to you. Managing yourself means making 1000's of phone calls, staying on top of
the business your in, and always ready for performance when performing your
skill is asked. To help you understand management a little better, picture
yourself as a product, like a pair of shoes, and you are trying to sell
yourself.... where do you need to be, who is going to buy you, and how are you
going to get yourself on the shelf for people to see. Now that you know how
to network, you are half way there as far as contacts. You want people to call
on to be in the loop of events that are taking place. Since the best manager in
the world is someone that looks out for your best interest and is into your work
100%, let's start with self management ( how to )
