The first thing that I teach my crew when I am putting together a radio show;
and the 1st thing I try to convey to models I work with, actors, and production
people.....
a. Always be ready
to be seen, always be ready to be on your toes. The most important aspect of
being an artist is being seen and acknowledged for what you have to offer. As
mentioned earlier, taking your talent to the people is the issue that needs to
be addressed and practiced no matter how old you are or how long you have been
in the business. Your
gift of being able to express yourself through your artistic ability is meant to
be exercised like a muscle.
b. You should always be prepared to be seen out in
public, even on that bad hair day, you never know when someone is going to
approach you and take notice to your work. You have to be exposed to people as much as
possible and see first hand how much you can effect one with your art, as well
as teach. Here is a learning example of how living your talent can help you learn
more.
and a story to bring it all home:
Similar to the Orlando experience, I had just moved to Phoenix and needed
a mix DJ for my afternoon show at Power 92. Mikey Freeman, the night DJ was very
quick to teach me how to find the right person to have on air. We had been to 4
or 5 clubs searching for that one person I was assuming I would NEVER find. I
was actually nervous because this was my first afternoon show, and I was new to
the time shift, and in real deep competition. We had met up with CoCo Cortez (
Chicago B-96 talent ) and she was pointing out her favorite DJ's as well,
but things were just not clicking, when all of the sudden out of nowhere is this
5'2 short looking DJ, with his hands in the air, and barely seeing over his DJ
booth rocking the mic, was bumping the mix. Not only was he in tune, but he had
his own far out style, short spikey bleached hair, and he even had some of the
kids in the club wearing his personalized gear. He had the whole club following him, he had
the floor packed, and he was in tune with the feel of Phoenix, the atmosphere of
the club, and the energy he created and maintained. I looked at Mikey and said,
" he is a fool, but he is what I need on my afternoon show" I approached him and
said, " dude, you wanna mix on my afternoon show at Power 92 ?" and he was like,
damn, are you serious.
Needless to say.......
DJ Fashion is still on the air in Phoenix, Arizona, and he probably doesn't
realize that I only noticed him because he was living his dream at that club, he
had taken his skill to the public and put his all into his art form, and that
was all I needed to see to know he was the right person for me to put in the
mix.
