Dress the part
____________

One thing I learned about entertainment that should be the most important thing you carry on with you besides credibility, is always dressing the part, wearing your game face, and always ready for people to see you.

Up until Orlando, Florida, I had really worked mainly for hip hop radio stations, hip hop events, and community events. My favorite artists were Nirvana, The Beastie Boys, Extreme, and then Eminem. I am a musician, so I love everything, but I carried the image of a B-Boy, Hip Hop, and Alternative look. There were days when I would dress up just to throw everyone off, and that is one sure thing that would happen. I never realized that this image could have been holding me down, I mean, we were the hottest sounding radio station in Phoenix at Power 92, and V-100 was #1 in all my demos at night, so of course I never thought about my image as something to worry about. While I was at 95.3 Party, I started seeing that 99% of the appearances were going to other talent. My Program Director at the time pulled me into his office and said, " if there is one thing I am bound to teach you at this radio station, it is to work on your appearance and develop a better perception that people get from you starting right here in the building "

Instead of coming into work in ( ghetto gear ) or thrashed out grunge gear, I started changing my image little by little. I started getting appearances at dealerships, classy night clubs etc......... That talk with my program director really made me look deeper into the person I projected to people. This led to MTV work in Miami, model searches, and conventions.  Your presence might be defined  by your performance, but that does not justify an image that is catered by the lifestyle surrounding you. It is obvious that you are not going to hit the stage in a suit and tie if your a hip hop artist, but have that suit and tie ready when you get that call to meet up with that record label.
