"From the Top"

 Don Parker

As you will soon read, smart and successful consultants like Don Parker, Steve Smith, Jerry Clifton, Jimmy Steal, etc.......... Not only are they consulting radio stations, but in some cases they are programming, training talent, and helping structure new projects. This means that their time is just as limited, if not non - existent when it comes time to getting time from them. I recently suggested to a friend of mine that she seek out and send her work to 10 consultants. I also explained to her that she probably won't hear back from any of them right away, but to be patient and understand how many hats everyone is wearing in radio. Don Parker was one of the consultants to respond. Again, if you are an up and coming talent, part - time, or even full time talent, it is wise to network with as many (PD's) and (Consultants) as possible. It might take a while to get feedback, but the time and effort you put into your work will eventually pay off. IE .... getting some creative criticism from some of the top radio people in the country.

#*$&#*,

Sorry it's taken me a few weeks to get back to you.  In addition to my normal routine, I've had to take over interim programming duties at KNGY/San Francisco.  I did listen to your air check.  Sounds like you have the basics down pretty well.  I assume you're looking for feedback and the main thing I hear is the need to break out of being a disc jockey to become a personality. Your breaks sound structured, which is not necessarily a bad thing, because we all need structure. The key to a great personality is to sound very spontaneous and loose...but the spontaneous nature needs to be planned carefully.  I always say that good radio is planned spontaneity.  Whether is a slightly different way of using the positioning statement, sounding a bit scattered here and there (but still focused in your mind to get the message across in a tight, controlled manner), or occasionally surprising the listener with something unexpected, you need to not sound predictable or like any other disc jockey.  I often think of Ellen Degeneres as one of the best at planned spontaneity.  She often sounds scattered or suddenly sidetracked to a different topic...but it's all carefully planned.

I don't know if that helps at all, but I do think working on being a personality and not a disc jockey is the next stage of development for you.

Thanks,

Don

Getting feed back like this from someone who is one of the top Program Directors / Consultants in the country is golden. It is worth your while to network and learn from each and every person you possibly can ! I happen to have the luxury of having Don Parker as my 2nd real Program Director in radio. With everything that I learned from him, our team in Phoenix took Power 92 to #1 for the first time in it's history of being a radio station. Don Parker worked with great talent like Bruce Kelly, Co Co Cortez, Rick Vaughn, Mikey Freeman, Big Willie, and we all came out ahead.  I urge you to make sure he is one of the consultants you send your packages to when you feel ready to work in radio. He will give you honest creative criticism that will help you grow................. Now that Don's e-mail will be PACKED.... I shall move on to the next .....
