The Internship
_____________
The
next 35 pages of this book will introduce you to some really cool people that
are working in the Radio Broadcasting field. They will share their thoughts on
internships, what you can learn, where you can learn, and even how to get your
first internship. I will even introduce you to a few counselors that place
interns in radio stations all over the country. I think these first few pages
will answer some really important questions you have and shed some light on real
radio today ! Most importantly, if you are a student in a Broadcasting School,
studying Journalism or Broadcast Communications, or maybe your an intern already, I will try and tackle some
important topics that may be frustrating you as you make decisions as to the
direction you want to go. There is also a step by step guide to networking with
the people you need to be talking to as you find your internship. The
more you learn before you start your internship the better, but the internship
is really the beginning for most.
The most exciting part of my radio career..... hands down, was the first day of my internship. I was an intern for Kelly Michaels of WLUM Hot 102.1 in Milwaukee, Wi. for about 6 months, and then I moved to production. I was 16 years old under the wings of a voice production guy named David Lee. David Lee was an Afternoon Air Talent at 93 QFM in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I might also add that David Lee is one of the most famous Classic Rock / Rock voice production guys in the country. At the time my only job was to help produce commercials, ( dub ) or copy hard copy commercials from reel to reel to cart. My internship was the most intriguing time spent during my Junior and Senior years in High School. I soaked in everything I possibly could. I practically lived in the production room. By learning the production room inside and out, I was able to practice my on air ability by making tapes in my spare time ( fake air checks !!! ). I quickly learned that an internship also allows you to start networking. You will meet all of the key people that will help you open up doors in the future. Some of the air talent that I met during my internship actually worked for a High School radio station nearby, so I was able to actually get air time within the first 60 days of my internship. After my internship with 93 QFM, I was excepted as an intern for WKKV V-100 Radio Milwaukee. Because of the training I received from David Lee and the 93 QFM staff, I went from intern, to part-time, to a full-time air talent within 6 months under my 1st real management team, Bailey Colman and Tony Fields. My internship consisted of promotions, doing station call out research, driving in the station van every day to meet people, station events that I could sneak into, and decorating events with banners and stickers. I strongly suggest learning promotions and marketing first. This will teach you how the inner working of the radio station really operates, and to be honest, every radio station needs help in the promotions department. I know that not all internships will move this fast, nor will you be able to rise as fast as some, but the experience you get by giving 10-20 hours a week to a radio station is priceless. Even if you are seeking a sports casting position, news, behind the scenes, etc.... the best way to get the experience is by seeking some opportunity. Before you begin to read this book, grab a pen and a piece of paper, and write down the web site information you are about to get, you will need it and visit the site EVERY DAY !
