Promotions Inside and Out
______________________
Promotions, just like the other chapters in this book, can be a 1000 page book
of it's own. From writing promotions to the people who are a part of the
promotions experience. I am going to cover as much of this department as I can,
and I will even have special promotions guru minded guests give you tips on how
to write and execute great promotions as well. If you are just starting out
in radio, this is the BEST place to start. You will be the eyes and the ears of
your radio station. You will start meeting and greeting people on the very first
day, and you will be in all of the places your radio station is at, so you can
make the radio station look incredible.
As an air talent, I looked back at what really got me where I needed to be for
success in radio. It all started in a Promotions Department. A successful
Promotions Department is the eyes and ears of the radio station. Depending on
what station you are with, your station's over all drive to be out in the
community, and the quality of the program director, will determine the true role
of a Promotions Department. Some programmers like my first true (PD) Tony
Fields, understood every detail of radio, so he knew what he wanted and how he
wanted to achieve his goals promotionally. This meant Bailey Coleman, (my first
boss) had to write extremely well to
satisfy a perfectionist ( Tony Fields ). Her job was to make the radio station
look beautiful everywhere we went. Even if we were at a (2) hour car remote, you
saw 20 banners declaring our brand was present. Oh, and be rest assured the Mr. Fields would roll around to the event and make sure the banners were everywhere.
Every on air giveaway had some type of content behind what we were giving away,
and each contest was well thought out and planned down to the bumper stickers we
had to give out. There was never a .... "Be caller 10 and win a movie
pass", It was more creative and interesting or it never hit the air. This
makes for a Promotions Department to be on the creative ball, and they
must work extremely well writing ideas, presenting them, seeing them through
with a Production Director, and sometimes working with the sales team to present
sales events.
As you can see, the Promotions Director has one of the hardest off air jobs in radio. If the promotion doesn't sell the station 200% then it is a bad promotional event. Thus, a successful Promotions Department learns how to make the radio station look like gold, and drives the talent to look like stars on the radio and at events. This means that you are a part of a team of people that is expected to make the radio station you work for look wonderful at all times. This means you will be getting dirty too. If you are given the opportunity to be a part of this environment, take advantage of every second you can learn from this team of management that works together. You might have the most tedious job in the world of rolling banners, peeling and placing station stickers on prizes, or doing inventory ( prize patrol ) however, every small task that you do will teach you something about how radio stations operate. Keeping the vehicles shiny and clean is a must, and always paying close attention to how people perceive you when you are out representing the radio station. As you grow in the Promotions Department you will see how a station promotion is written, presented to sales, presented to programming, initiated, and then carried out before your eyes on the radio. Lastly, you'll be at the event that started with a piece of paper, a pen, and maybe even your own. This world is exciting, demanding, very detail orientated, and you have to pay close attention to every little detail that exists in your way. You become the radio station when you are out on the streets in the van, at the club, the car dealership, etc..... You are no longer Jenny, you are the Power 96 Miami's Party Station girl..... You suddenly represent a whole company from the first day you are in the Promotions Department. This is the very best way to get your foot in the door and learn from the people around you, You will be around the entire staff as they congregate to plan events and see them through. You may get to be a voice in a few commercials, you may be asked to write ideas, decorate the events, work with the talent to make them look outstanding, but you will be a part of a growing process that will exceed your greatest expectations if you are on time, dedicated to learning, and ambitious to offer your services.
