The Promotions part of any business is like the center of this business. Never stop learning. Understand that this is a business, so in addition to learning the skills of working in radio, learn the vital business skills that make keep this medium alive.  My advice to you up and coming in Radio Broadcasting Promotions, work with sales with NTR opportunities and making it work for both our client and the programming side. Here is a list of things you will learn in Promotions Department atmosphere.

- Work with programming and focus all promotions around programming goals. Liaise with community groups for PSA's and other station involvement.
- Oversee on-locations and other promotions
- Monitor the progress of sales and programming promotions
- Create storyboards, write scripts, and supervise production of television campaigns.
- Work within budget
- Creation and supervision of web design, layout
- Oversee Loyal Listener Club database
- Write and create monthly e-zine
- Coordinate and delegate smaller, daily promotions
- Attain tickets and CD's from record reps
- host for daily community events feature on local TV station 4.

To get started I suggest you volunteer at your community radio station. Get out there and meet people already in the industry and begin with the end in mind. If you know what you want to do in the industry, find someone who already has that job and pick their brain. Ask the questions you know will help you move forward. How did they get to where they are? Keep this in mind to. Presentation is everything, especially in the Promotions realm of any form of the Entertainment Business. The presentation of yourself is extremely important. Shallow as it may seem,  we all subconsciously form our own opinions within a few seconds of meeting someone. You only have a one chance to make a first impression. Maintain consistency for yourself. Set a standard, always look, act, and be professional, and competent in dealing with your clients and your co workers. Being in promotions, you are detail-oriented, must always be on the ball, and catch the three other ones that get thrown at you on a daily basis with style and grace. And when you look good, you feel good! Also keep in mind, Programming & Sales work side by side. It  is like striking a balance to make promotions work for both sides without compromising quality. I am constantly attending and meeting business leaders, clients within the community to keep myself top of mind, so presentation becomes key every second of the day. This will help you along the way in your career no matter what you do

If you are just becoming an intern for a new radio station adventure, here is what will be going through the person's mind that is looking to have you assist them.

Do they understand the concept and the process and the reason why they do promotions?
How do they handle working under pressure?
What is their attitude like?
Do they really want to be in promotions?

Now it is time to meet some of the people in the business that make radio fun to listen to.
