 On Air Talent
_____________

Being an on air personality is much harder than the average person could even imagine.... Picture this.... In some cases you have 12-15 seconds to relate to your audience, connect with your audience, give a clear concise message as to the one thought you have chosen to exemplify as IMPORTANT, without ruining the reason you are on the radio to begin with ( music ) and in this same time frame you have to be entertaining, informative, passionate about your listeners, consistent with the mood that is set musically, and you have to be a part of the audio as if you were part of the recording from the beginning, and always sounding compelling and unique ........ drawing each listener into each word that you speak, not losing attention for a second................. this is called being an ON AIR TALENT.

There are 100's of different variations of what makes up a great on air personality or on air talent. Just recently I have been producing the Jamie, Jack, and Stench morning show ( Star 98 Los Angeles ) in Bakersfield, Ca. Jamie White is an excellent ( Personality ) and she does exactly what your supposed to do to maintain yourself as a ( Personality )... She relates to her audience, captivates the listener, and makes people want more.

Welcome to Air Talent across the nation..... This is another fun part of this book " Making It" where everyday on air talents tell you their story. They are telling you like it is in Radio Broadcasting. It's a behind the scenes look into the on air studio. Now you get to see things from an Air Talent's perspective, real true to heart advice, and a look at the real work you will be doing in Radio Broadcasting........ You will learn about where the hottest talent get their knowledge, you will learn how they operate, where they focus, how they focus, and most important, how to focus. Some of the best talent in the country from New York, LA, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, and some of the hottest up and coming talents from smaller markets offer real life information that you can learn from. You will learn about great places to show prep, software you should get for your home PC, and most importantly, you will learn in this chapter why it is so hard to get calls and e-mails from PD's.... You will understand the demanding expectations that are drawn out from the beginning of this chapter, and you will learn 100 things you can do to prepare yourself and better yourself to become an on air talent. Get a pen and a piece of paper to write down information you can study in the future. You may hear the some of the same messages as you read, and on the other hand, each air talent will give you some type of knowledge, wisdom, and guidance from their point of views as to how radio has effected them. One of the features that this book offers is the ability to read about a typical day in the profession. REMEMBER ! this is a personality driven business, so everyone you meet and read about will be different in some sort of fashion..... Some of the information you read you will learn from, and others you will wonder about, but all in all, each person in this book will offer you their point of views and understandings about a business that is 100% exciting and entertaining if you put your effort into learning. You will be able to learn the ins and outs of each person's ideology of radio, and in some cases you will learn the basics building blocks needed to start out too. For instance, Java Joel is one of the top on air talents in the country as I am writing a part of this book ... January 19th, 2004....... You may have heard of him on Kiss FM in Chicago, Illinois, and if not, you will get to understand his way of thinking if you want to learn things you can do to start getting ready to be an on air personality.........

Starting things off is  ( drum roll ) Java Joel ( on air talent ) gives you tips on becoming an air talent of the future......

Perform: If you're still in school...get involved with any of the performing arts clubs--drama, choir, band. Getting yourself out in front of people will give you a unbridled confidence. Learning an
instrument will teach you the basics of musicality--a trait most better than average music jocks exhibit. You'll learn the importance of showmanship (is that a word?) well it is a lifestyle in radio... and the basics of theatrics. Radio is theatre of the mind and the better you understand that, the better you will perform. Taking part in the school choir is a good way of exercising your vocal chords. It wouldn't hurt to get a vocal coach, either.

Read: Be a voracious reader. It's easier than ever to find articles, programming philosophies, play lists, bios, histories and stories regarding the radio industry. Reading, in general, will increase the words in your vocabulary which is incredibly important--especially if you aspire to succeed in the performing end of the business. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, the morning
paper...Read as much as you can.

Listen: Listen to all types of radio. CHR, Urban, News/Talk, NPR, Hot AC, satellite, internet, all genres, formats & eras. Take it all in...Listen. Don't analyze it ...not yet, anyway. For now...just listen. Also...prepare yourself for the worst. "Radio" isn't a get rich quick deal. Make sure you're doing it because you feel you HAVE to do it...because you WANT to do it. Make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. Prepare yourself...at first you'll find yourself making shit money. You'll move around from city to city. You'll work for plenty of megalomaniacs that think they have the Secret To Radio. Be patient...learn the basics first, hone your craft slowly & surely and never lose sight. Keep your eye on the prize! :)

Java Joel ( formerly of Kiss FM Chicago ) soon to be on somewhere bigger and better .......
