The Production World
___________________
Welcome to the world of Production. This world is run by names like St. John,
David Lee, Jigga Juice, Mikey Freeman, and Rick Party ( just to name a few that
make it hot )... and you will learn from them in this chapter. This chapter of the book will
also work as an
audio chapter as well as great reading. In this section of this book you will get a
general idea of what production really is, how some of the production sounds, meet some really talented Production
Directors, you'll learn what software and programs they use, how they
developed their skills, and even get the very basics on information and tips
they use to be successful. You will see how some of the imaging and production
directors get their material.... from networking with everyday listeners to
donate their voices to commercials to running around arenas with the bands to
get sound byte for future production.
Learning
the basics of production can not only enhance your ability to maintain a career
in Radio Broadcasting, but it can be the determining factor as to whether you
win or lose on the air. Just by being able to produce my own segments, always
seeking to have something sound better on my nightly shows, and always wanting
to create something new and unique, is what helped me win in my past jobs. As stated in the beginning of this book, I
started my radio career off as a production intern. This allowed me to do so
much more as an on air talent then some of the other talents I met working in
radio. I was really surprised to meet talented on air people that didn't even
touch a production room. Then I realized why their shows didn't sound as prepared as
they could have sounded. Production can actually be a lot of fun once you get over
the fear of starting out. Intimidation is the #1 reason why people are immune to
a production room. Get in that room and get your feet wet and after 6 months,
you will be on your way to having better shows.
Production is a dirty word to some people in this business
too, and you will meet them as you get into Radio Broadcasting. I will say this
though, learning production basics and elements in today's radio world is almost
a must. With budgets shrinking and full radio staffs becoming extinct, you almost always
have to have some production knowledge to be considered for a job. It used to be
that in the Major Markets, a radio station had one Production Director that
handled a majority of the assigned production ( commercials that needed to be
prepared to be on the air ) and the on air talents in some cases weren't even
allowed in the production room. In small market radio it is just the opposite,
every on air talent is required to do daily production. I will also say
this...... I wouldn't have a job today if it wasn't for learning and using my
talent to do production. I wanted to come off the radio for a year to reinvent
myself and change gears, and the only way I was able to do this was by igniting
my creativity. Ej Tyler, a (PD) in Bakersfield, Ca. at KLLY Kelly 95.3 gave me a
chance to start out learning the ropes of using my production ability in the
Imaging realm of radio. I have grown 1000% as an all around talent just by
taking this opportunity, which NEVER would have come had I not taken production
serious in my prior years on the radio. I will also say this, air talent
positions may come and go as fast as GM's and PD's try to cut down costs ( which
sucks ) however, great production talent will always be needed. You will never
see St. John ( Wild 94.9 San Francisco ) out of a job, nor will you see Kelly
Doherty ( Clear Channel ) looking too hard for work, they are production gurus
who amaze anyone that listens to there work.
I suppose if you are new
to Radio Broadcasting, you are new to the terms, so now would be a good time to
define some of the words I have used a few times..... as well as words that some
of the guests in this chapter will use. The next page will tackle the
different elements of Production, the meanings, and samples of each element, and
then you will meet some of the most innovative and creative Production Directors
in the country.
