Production Tips
_____________
If you are just getting into the production room for the first few times, this
is the perfect time to develop good habits. As a matter if fact, your production
director / mentor will guide you through what he or she does to stay organized.
Every radio station production room will have some type of organizational
foundation as to where certain things are kept, filed, stored, placed, and used.
Since I am a work in progress, I work with our Production Director named Erik
Fox, who is APD, and does 1.2 million other things. One thing that I learned
right from day (1) of my position was to find a system of organization, so that
everything I was producing had a place on our system. This way, any piece of
production, imaging, or on air element could be found at the drop of a dime by
him or EJ Tyler (PD). These systems that radio stations have in place are just as important
to understand and navigate as the production you are producing. You need to know
your surroundings inside and out, so that at the drop of a dime you can add or
subtract elements into your work without feeling lost. You will learn how to access these folders and obtain sound effects
and musical elements as well as
folders where you can leave your work in the future after you are done
recording. Learn these systems that your production department has set up, so that you are familiar with where all of
the basic elements are in the production room. The basics to learning the production room
will then follow.
The Top 10 things To Learn On Day 1
* Learn how to turn the mic on and off
* Learn where to plug your head phones into the console
* Learn how to adjust the mic level while your listening to yourself talk
* Learn how to play elements underneath your voice
* Ask the production director to give you some mic level samples and pitch
samples
* Learn to record your voice into a multi track program
* Learn how to take basic music and sound elements and add them into your multi
track program
* Learn to put together real simple voice projects
* As you learn this simple structure, you will get a stronger feel for the
basics
* Set up a folder on your radio station's production system early on, and save
everything you work on.
( this will help you develop a stronger understanding for how to use your voice
to cut into the elements that are playing underneath your voice )
Once you have learned these basic steps, practice turning the mic on and
talking. Once you feel comfortable, run some music underneath your voice and
practice talking over the music to get used to your pitch and attacks. Tape
yourself talking and listen to your recorded voice to hear the levels. This is
just the very start to working with your voice and levels, so it is ok that you
make mistakes and sound too loud or too quiet. This is called getting your feet
wet with the very basics, and as we go on through this chapter you will pick up
so me dynamic techniques from the Production Directors and Voicing specialists
that have left incredible advice as to things you can work on !
