FM), WXKS-AM; Intern for Opie And Anthony Show - WAAF-FM.
My high school had a radio station, so that planted the
seeds. My cousin being the Creative Services Director at Kiss 108 helped
get my foot in the door. Now, I get to play around with sound and I love my
job. My day can consist of anything from writing promo copy to voicing
sweepers to spending 6 hours fine tuning a 60 second piece of audio. Other
times, you may find me at some of our concerts getting audio from different
bands and fans to use in future imaging pieces. My advice to young up and coming
production people, always try to create it yourself. No drops! The
funnier, the better - but wherever you can find inspiration, use it! Learn and
practice healthy production habits like: Practice, play, practice, and play some
more. I've been doing this for 6 years and still learn
new things daily. As for networking, just try to talk with as many people as
possible. For me, after the other employees here, it starts with our
external voice talent. Having friends from past stations helps and it just
grows and grows... It has helped me land a
few freelance opportunities. One of our voice guys needed his demo for the
William Morris Agency. He liked what I had done with his voice in the past
and asked me to create it. A great production /
imaging talent will learn to get content from literally everywhere.
Television, the internet, other stations in various markets, movies, concerts,
outings, events, clubs, the office etc...
As far as your demo and how you prepare to go out and look
for your first job, make it no longer than 3 minutes. And most
importantly, put your best stuff right at the beginning. In most cases,
you only have maybe 10-15 seconds to catch someone's ear. If you don't
pass that initial 10-15 seconds - next! In regards to resumes, this
industry is different than the corporate world. Have a little fun with your
resume and get somewhat creative. As far as mine, I usually put my resume
on an obscenely bright piece of florescent paper to literally make it stand out
like a sore thumb. I have known others to make theirs into a champagne
bottle label with an attached message stating that they'll pop open the real
thing when he's hired. Another friend put in random things in his resume
such as "Jedi Knight" and "Paris Hilton's videographer".
Basically, it all really boils down to your demo. Make it exciting to
listen to.
