I'm a production Director, Copywriter & producer for a cluster of 3 stations
in Rutland Vermont and I'm also the morning talent for our country station. I
write mostly commercials but I also consider commercials to be part of the
overall presentation of the station and therefore, the commercials must be
entertaining or at least thought provoking.
I visualize the commercial first., Then I use absurdity and humor to make my
point. Actually, finding creative content is easy. It's in your head. The hard
part is getting it out of your head and putting it on paper.
Here are 5 helpful tips for putting together good commercial ideas, basic
production, imaging, etc........
a. Save all your parts. If possible, save all multi track sessions too. This
makes editing so much easier.
b. Write the way people talk in real life, not the way we write in real life. We
ALL speak differently than we write so one must strive for writing for the
spoken word well. a wise man (Shakespeare) once said, "Brevity is the soul
of wit", which means, Funny is funnier when it's shorter. This takes time
and practice.
c. Learn to use everyone around you, their voices, their ideas, etc... at your
disposal. Even if someone doesn't have the acting ability or that so called
"radio voice", you may still be able to utilize them in some other
way.
d. Watch TV Listen to commercials on other stations, listen to other stations
liners & bumpers. Really listen to how they are presented and try to
determine the point of the piece.
e. Is there a point? You always need a point!
Sound effects and good acting are what make the spot work.
