Production and the understanding of how it can make you a better asset, is definitely the most crucial physical attribute you can bring to the creative table as you learn how to utilize the production room better. The next chapter takes a new twist. It is something that anyone can learn how to do, it is the most important tool to grasp. It is how you communicate as a communicator on a business level. The most important tool you can learn in the Entertainment Business / Radio / Records / etc..... is learning to network, and then promoting yourself. You can be the best imaging, production, on air talent, MD, PD, APD..... in the world, but if you don't learn how to network and build a solid form of friends to share and get information from, nobody will know your ability. Right from day 1 of an internship you will be networking immediately. From the first introduction to staff members, you are developing a network of people that you will be working with. It is important that you take your time getting to know people and always be yourself. You don't have to put on an act to get attention from the people around you. Just be yourself and prepare to work hard in the radio station you get into. One thing that I have taught my interns and crews is to always introduce yourself to people around you, and always give and receive business cards. Keep this information in a data base, because you never know when you will need to call upon the people you meet. Even as an intern doing appearance set ups, remotes, and events for the station, you will meet the managers and people involved with organizing the events you are working. At least shake hands and meet the people. This is the basics of networking and it starts as soon as you walk through the radio station door.
