Building Your Resume
_______________

This chapter will introduce you to Consultants / OM's  / GM's / PD's / and Air Talent that will share with you their ideas on building your resume. You will learn what type of resume to send, and who to send it to. I will also share some thoughts and present a new resume that I have constructed as well as 5 different resumes you can download and use.  I will also have some major market air talents share the resume that got them the job they currently hold. Your resume should be a dynamic master piece as to who you are, what you have learned, where you have been, and give an idea as to where you are going. I know my idea of a resume and others ideas differ, so I am just going to demonstrate how a basic resume should come off according to the past 300 responses I have received from Program Directors that have offered their advice. As you read through different industry leaders opinions you will find different views, none of which are iron clad, wrong or right, but all messages do have one thing in common....... " grammar ! " As you know, if your journey in radio is to be on the radio, then you already know that your air check, in some cases, is your resume. A very large percent of the program directors that have responded to help write this book listen to your air check as if it were your resume. Therefore, I will also touch on the air check subject in this chapter as well as throughout the rest of the book.

" I look for previous experience first. I don't rule out people who have fewer entries.  I just want to know who and what I'm dealing with.  I want to know not just where they worked, but what they did while there.  I'm more interested in potential rather than a long, impressive track record.

If I get a resume with a grammar or spelling error, I generally remove it from consideration.  If you can't take the time to proof read one of the most important documents of your professional life, how can I be expected to trust you with the everyday (detail) work of running a successful radio station?  Allowing those kind of errors on your resume shows me you are a person who pays little attention to detail. Your resume is the first impression that you will have on someone that may be interested in hiring you. You have to really prepare this information as to who you are. You will read different opinions that people have in the business. From there, it is up to you to decide exactly how you want to portray yourself. Make sure you go over your resume 10 times, run spell check, go over it again and again before you put it out there on the line. I will be featuring some top industry leaders in the next few pages, but listen to what one Program Director says about resumes:
