Name: Robert Dale McCubbins

Position: Program Director / Production Manager

History: I've been in radio 23 years, however, I've had several radio and TV gigs concurrently, TV during the day, radio nights and weekends, so if you add all those up, I've got nearly 45 years experience... don't I wish it counted that way with retirement!

My motivation to be a part of this business was pretty simple. I just had some weird left turn tangents, that swung me around to what I really enjoyed doing ... like, when I was a kid, I pretended to DJ the radio that I'd listen to... but going through jr & sr high, and college, I got away from that idea. I love talking to people... and I love music ... and God literally led me to where I am today ... because, initially, I'd wanted to be a concert classical guitarist in college.

My initial advice to you as an up and coming talent:  PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
Find a small station close to a burger or pizza joint and get a job to pay for your addiction, and volunteer to get your fix... you may be lucky ( or unlucky!) enough to start out and actually get paid to be in a small (real small!) radio station... but with corporate ownerships taking over, you'll really have to convince Mom & Pop that you can do what they want and need. If it is really in your heart to be a part of this business, you will find a way. If your young and want to know what you can do to prepare for this business,

   READ OUT LOUD!!!

start by reading these 10 sure ways to help you prepare for a career in Radio Broadcasting

* Tell stories to younger siblings or cousins, volunteer at the library for story time, get in front of people and READ ...... because you have to make it interesting, everything you say, voice inflections, tone, emotion.

* Take speech, debate or theatre at high school or the public theater.
* Offer to read bulletins in church announcements...
* LISTEN!!! listen to actors, speech makers news-weather-sports-casters.
* Get audio speeches from the library, get audio recordings of Wolfman Jack, Larry Lujack, Scott Shannon, etc. listen to the DJ on air...

* ALWAYS READ & WRITE!!! whatever you prepare to say... write it down, and try to make it more concise.... The best book I've read in a long time for radio and I HIGHLY recommend it... Milo Frank's "How to get your point across in 30 seconds or less"

* PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE... get a tape recorder / video recorder and practice...
* Know what you sound like, work with your high school speech teacher and ask for help with pronunciation.
* Get into school plays, volunteer to read announcements over the intercom... to quote Nike just do it!.
* Once you get your first job, repeat this list throughout your entire career !
